Monster Pancakes

By Carolyn Prestwich

Illustrated by Ken Gamage

Stir up the batter
Round and round
Listen to the spoon
Make a mixing sound.

Pour out the batter
Watch it cook
Flip it over
Then come look!

There goes a crocodile
This one's a fish
Is that a horny toad
In your dish?

A big fat hippo
A shooting star
MONSTER PANCAKES
Is what they are.

Put on the butter
And the syrup too
MONSTER PANCAKES
Are good for you.

Eat them up
One two three four
When they're gone
Say "please" for more.

Recipe for MONSTER PANCAKES

Break two eggs into a bowl. Beat them with a hand beater.

Add:
1½ cups milk
2 cups Bisquick

Beat again.

To cook: (this is a good job for a Dad or a Grandpa.)
Put batter in a pitcher. Pour carefully onto a hot griddle, in the shape of a monster. Cook until edges are done. Turn and cook the other side. MONSTER PANCAKES are good with syrup or powdered sugar.

About the Author

The stories I write are usually inspired by my nine grandchildren. Monster Pancakes originated when "Grandpa" started presiding at the griddle, making Sunday morning pancakes to order. Each creation, no matter how true, no matter how messy, is greeted with delight and gobbled with gusto.

Recently relocated in Carlsbad, I have lived in California all my life. After graduation from Pomona College I spent many years among small children, my own and those I taught. My stories celebrate milestones and everyday issues in the lives of children.
