Subtraction Blues

by Brenda M. Morris

Illustrated by Neal Stepp

There was a girl named Jewel

who didn't like math at school.

She thought the teachers cruel.

"All those numbers in my head!

I can't control them," she said.

"They won't stay still to be read."

"They crawl and they dance.

They wiggle, giggle, and prance.

They act like they are from France!

Then Ms. Bass taught her a clue.

How to get answers that're true.

Giving Jewel a new view.

When borrowing remember,

bring back then from the neighbor.

Leaving him one less number.

Add what's there to the ten.

Try that subtraction again.

You'll find the way wide open.

Now Jewel's the head of her class.

And every test she does pass.

All because of dear Ms. Bass.
