Sounds

by Carolyn Argyle

I heard the wind blowing when all was quiet and still
The sound, it brought right through me a shivering chill.
Why was this sound so ominous, as though a totally new sound?
Had I never heard the wind before as it blew above the ground?

I heard a little creak and what was that I wondered now?
Has never a house creaked before as this one did right now?
And what is that ticking-is that clock always so loud?
It never seemed to sound so loud amongst the usual crowd.

But now alone in the stillness and the quiet of the night
These background noises come to the front and enter the limelight.
