AB: This study compares the responses of black and white preservice teachers as they engaged about a young adult novel which addressed racial and sexual diversity. Student teachers used young adult literature with protagonists from diverse backgrounds as one means of coming to understand and value children of all backgrounds. Small groups met to discuss one book which was written by a black author, depicting the close relationship between a strong, self-assured black woman and her teenaged son. The book also addresses issues of homosexuality and interracial relationships. Data collection involved student reading journals and researcher observations of group discussions. Two themes emerged: finding oneself in a text (moving from margins to center) and becoming the other (moving from center to margins). Within these two themes, there were several categories: recognition of the author's purpose or values, response to being black in a white world, and response to being gay in a heterosexual world. The black teacher education students found themselves in their reading of the book, finding space to reflect on who they were and to release their own stories. The white teacher education students reflected that in their reading of the book they felt they needed to find a way in, but they generally remained looking in from outside. (Contains 26 references.) AB: This book covers works of fiction, oral tradition, and poetry published from 1994 through 1999, and is deemed suitable for young people from preschool through high school. The book deals with four major ethnic groups within the United States: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native-American Indians. It contains 561 entries on 541 books (a few are considered in more than one category). Also included in these entries is information about 130 other books by these writers or related books that help in identifying the writer or that amplify the description of a particular book. In addition, the entries are also expanded by references to more than 260 books that appear in the earlier volume. Noting that the 1994 volume involves 570 entries on 590 books published from 1995 through 1993, along with other related books, the new book points out that, taken together, the two volumes offer 1,131 entries and information on more than 1,100 featured books and cover a span of 15 years of multicultural literature for young people. While the book is intended primarily for the use of librarians, teachers, and parents, scholars and researchers could find it a springboard for insights into the development of multicultural literature during this period. AB: This paper examines the portrayal of minority cultures in children's picture books. In picture books, the illustrations are as important as the text with respect to the meaning of the story. As a result, picture books have the potential to influence a child's view of other cultures. Currently, only three percent of picture books represent minority cultures. This results in two negative consequences: minority children may not see their own image reflected in books, and majority children may receive a distorted view of the real world. Also, the books that do represent minority cultures may represent them inaccurately or show stereotypical images. Multicultural literature introduces children to the values of other cultures. The reflection of these images should be evaluated for accuracy and presence of stereotypes. With multicultural literature, children gain a validation of their own background and values as well as an introduction to other cultures. Criteria for evaluating multicultural literature are also included. (Contains 28 references.) (JLB)

AB: This book provides some helpful tools that will allow teachers to use children's literature as a vehicle for modifying cultural stereotypes. The sections contain short summaries of 239 carefully selected children's books, each of which features main characters who contribute to an understanding of one's cultural heritage and ways to modify a cultural stereotype. The characters in the books present a point of view to combat stereotyping. Summaries identify characters from different cultural backgrounds, their problems, and the resolutions. The summaries also indicate the grade level(s) (kindergarten through grade 3, and grade 4 through grade 8) for which each book would be most appropriate and are divided into the following subsections: (1) African American Heritage; (2) Asian American Heritage; (3) European American Heritage; (4) Latino American Heritage; and (5) Native American Heritage. The sections of the bibliography contain entries with examples of realistic/contemporary fiction, folk literature, historical fiction, and biography. Each book is followed by a target activity that can be used to help children internalize ways to modify cultural stereotypes. A final section in the book provides extended activities (mini-units) for a selected few of the children's literature titles summarized in the previous sections. (Contains an index.) (GLR)

AB: Designed to help early childhood and elementary educators in Iowa integrate multicultural, nonsexist, and global (MNG) perspectives into the existing curriculum, this paper discusses issues surrounding their integration and provides two extensive bibliographies of curriculum resources. First, the paper reviews the definition and purposes of MNG education according to the Iowa Department of Education and describes the Department's MNG goals and themes as follows: that students understand themselves and others as cultural beings in a cultural context; that students recognize diversity in the country and the world; that students understand the effect of group membership on values, attitudes, and behaviors; that students understand the dynamics of discrimination, bias, prejudice, and stereotype; and that students demonstrate skills for effective social action. The themes include global interdependence; human resources, values, and culture; the global environment and natural resources; global peace and conflict management; and change and alternative futures. For each goal and theme, the paper provides a summary of a relevant book and a list of creative activities for integrating the book into the curriculum. Finally, the paper includes two bibliographies of MNG resources: a 48-item bibliography organized by the 10 goals and themes, and a 358-item bibliography of works on other cultures organized by country or culture of origin.
