AB: Efferent teaching asks the student to read for a predetermined answer, focusing on another person's ideas of the text's meaning. Aesthetic teaching allows for literature to be read and experienced as art through the reader's personal transaction with the text which focuses on one's own interest to create and understand the meaning. This paper examines sixth graders' responses to literature as they undergo reader response theory in the language arts classroom using "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. The case study takes place over a 3-week period in which the teacher recorded student discussions and kept a journal. Findings indicated that the reading experience must always include an aesthetic reading. However, the complete and thorough study of literature requires a balance between both aesthetic and efferent--a balance that begins with the aesthetic and slowly moves, when the students are ready, to the efferent. AB: Encourages students to slow down and to reflect upon what they had read. Focuses on the visual arts, particularly for their capacity to help move students from the concrete to the abstract. Notes that Lowry's (1993) novel "The Giver" particularly lent itself to this approach because its powerful visual imagery encourages readers to return to and reflect upon the novel. (SC)

AB: A curriculum that asks students to consider the implications of censorship would include not only "Fahrenheit 451" but also other works of adolescent literature, Holocaust literature, and science fiction. Works written about the Holocaust, which can be considered a type of absolute censorship, help students to consider censorship's companionship with intolerance. Adolescent literature helps students to understand situations in society today that too often resemble the kinds of intolerance and prejudice that led to the destruction of millions of lives in Germany. And science fiction, which often provides insights into the concerns of the day the author was living in can provide a useful backdrop for considering society's potential for both good and evil. Some of the themes that can be explored with students would, for instance, invite students to see literature as an attempt to communicate one person's understanding of the world to others. Works that would be relevant to this inquiry would include Chester Aaron's "Gideon," Uri Orlev's "The Man from the Other Side," and Chista Laird's "Shadow of the Wall." Another theme investigates what an individual must be willing to stand up for when facing a censorship decision. Holocaust stories, such as Miep Gies' "The Hiding Place" and Lois Lowry's "Number the Stars" help students explore why some people are willing to face death rather than stand by passively in crisis times. Written responses of individual junior high and high school students attest to their empathetic involvement in these issues. (TB)

AB: Books that remind children and adolescents that writing is fun and that they can be writers not only confirm the reading/writing connection, but also demonstrate that reading can be a springboard to writing. Writing and receiving letters is very exciting to beginning readers, and there are many picture books that provide examples of how to write a letter, what to include, and how a person can organize his/her thoughts. "The Jolly Postman, Or, Other People's Letters" by Janet and Allan Ahlberg, "Frog and Toad Are Friends" by Arnold Lobel, and "Letter to Amy" by Ezra Jack Keats, for example, illustrate some of the purposes of writing with which young children are familiar: to express thanks and appreciation, to issue an invitation, and to express the writer's feelings. Bruce Brooks' "The Moves Make the Man" shows two adolescent boys advocating writing as a worthwhile activity, not something to be confined to school assignments. In this story, the reader is told what "equipment" is needed for writing, and that writing is an effective vehicle for sorting out thoughts, and for telling a story. Other stories such as "Dicey's Song" by Cynthia Voight and "Dear Mr. Henshaw" by Beverly Cleary illustrate that getting a response is another prime reason for writing. And Lois Lowry's "Rabble Starkey" teaches students how to improve their own writing by using a thesaurus. These and other books are good models for reminding students that writing is fun. (PRA)
