AB: Developing the lifelong love of reading requires lifetime literacy efforts. Teachers and administrators who support these efforts view the language arts from a "big-picture" perspective but realize that they must act in specific ways. Determining students' attitudes toward reading, giving them experiences with different texts, providing them with opportunities to select resources and to read them in school, and helping them to connect skills and strategies to interesting and meaningful contexts are only a few of the ways that support the lifetime reading habit. Although these activities are beneficial for all developing readers, those who struggle with literacy profit from the extra support of "scaffolding." Scaffolding, however, should not be isolated or reductionistic; instead, it should represent the same instructional direction that is intended for non-disabled learners. (Contains 55 references.) AB: This book shows middle school and high school classroom teachers how read-aloud excerpts from a variety of genres can be used in the content areas. The book aims to promote students' motivation to read and further study. It offers teaching ideas for special populations such as adult beginning readers and readers with disabilities. The book includes principles for selecting, locating, and using read-alouds. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction of the content area and its focus, after which three or four read-aloud and read-along selections are presented in detail, followed by some abbreviated selections. The eight chapters in the book are: (1) "Why Read Aloud?" (2) "Read-Alouds for Science"; (3) "Read-Alouds for Mathematics and Geography"; (4) "Read-Alouds for Social Studies"; (5) "Read-Alouds for English and Language Arts"; (6) "Read-Alouds for Music, Art, and Health/Physical Education"; (7) "Read-Alouds for Second Language Learners"; and (8) "Read-Alouds for Special Populations." Appendixes contain content area book lists, a list of journal columns on read-alouds, and a 31-item reference list. (NKA)

AB: The stories and studies that make up this book pursue two intertwining paths of inquiry: (1) how highly engaged adolescent readers produce meaning; and (2) what can be done in the classroom to help reluctant readers perceive reading as a creative and personally meaningful pursuit. Chapter 1 looks at approaches to teaching reading and discusses an interactive model which can lead to a reading-centered classroom. Chapter 2 explores the role of reading in students' lives, focusing on three avid student readers and how the experiences of these students could help more reluctant readers. Chapter 3 looks at types of student reading activity, including literary letters, thinking aloud protocols, and symbolic story representation, and describes 10 different dimensions students used as they created, experienced, and responded to literary works. Chapter 4 explores using drama to promote reading and help less proficient readers; chapter 5 looks at the importance of visualization in reading. Chapter 6 stresses the need to expand concepts of reading, response, and literature. Appendices include: (1) "Questions and Activities for the Ten Dimensions of Reader Response"; and (2) "Revolving Role Drama Lesson Plans for 'The Incredible Journey.'" (Contains 110 references.) (ND)
