AB: Noting that the conflicts arising daily for young children provide an opportunity for adults to model and teach skills for handling conflict peacefully, this guide provides tips for preventing unnecessary conflict, offers "first aid" for conflict moments, and provides resources for addressing common situations that can cause conflict. Developed cooperatively by Ohio's Commission on Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management, Head Start Association, and Department of Education Division of Early Childhood, with implementation facilitated by many Ohio public libraries, the guide is comprised of 40 thematic units of instruction for the early childhood setting, with most units accompanied by home cards providing tips for preventing conflict and suggested activities. Each unit contains information on the importance of the topic for conflict management and its link to peace, suggested books, activities, and copies of home cards. AB: This article discusses the use of visual arts activities to help young children cope with separation anxiety and sibling rivalry. Addressed to preschool and elementary school teachers seeking therapeutic classroom activities, the article suggests ways of using children's literature as starting points for drawing activities focused on anxiety issues in the stories. Three fundamentals of the creative process are described: experience, expression, and communication. The experience is the act of viewing a page in a picture book chosen for each topic and having the children relate to it by drawing on their own experiences. The expression will be the child's ability to bring that experience to a visual form in a work of art. Communication is the child's ability to verbalize his or her thoughts and feelings on this creation. The article suggests sample books along with descriptions of the creative process and provides samples of children's art.

AB: Early childhood teachers can help young children develop an awareness of and appreciation for the many kinds of family structures in today's society. This Digest provides suggestions for teachers who may have children in their classroom who were adopted. Strategies include: (1) select curriculum activities and materials that represent diverse families; (2) reconsider the name of "adopt-a" projects in the classroom because the phrase devalues the concept of adoption and adoptive parenthood; (3) listen carefully to children's questions--if a child's question deals with the concept of origin, the teacher should not assume that the child is asking about adoption; (4) avoid bias toward adopted children; and (5) consider using bibliotherapy. Careful curriculum planning combined with adoption awareness, genuine concern, and sensitivity will ensure a positive early education experience for adopted children. (Author/LPP)

AB: This package consists of a facilitator's guide and three booklets that were developed to provide basic preventive health information for adults caring for young children and presents a story line with characters who become more self-confident in coping with children's health issues as they build their knowledge about preventive health. The stories, which are written at about a fourth-grade reading level, were reviewed by health and literacy educators and adult learners and pilot tested with adult participants in Even Start family literacy programs in Pennsylvania. The three stories, which revolve around a grandmother who is raising her granddaughter and two neighbors who are also raising children, deal with the following topics: communicating with children and helping them develop good communication skills; the concept of preventive health; and the importance of dental health and regular dentist visits. The facilitator's guide accompanying the three stories contains the following: explanations of several instructional techniques for building learners' literacy and thinking skills while imparting essential health information; suggestions for adapting the materials for different audiences, including adult beginning readers and nonnative speakers of English; discussion questions, transparency masters, and reproducible literacy activities; 50 recommended resources; and a glossary. AB: Children experience a wide variety of life experiences that are stressful to them. Children's stories and drawings allow adults to understand children's perceptions and reactions, and picture books enable children to experience stressors safely in a supportive setting. This paper describes a storytelling and drawing intervention based on art therapy, bibliotherapy, and other child psychotherapy techniques for use by teachers of young children coping with stress. The paper emphasizes the complex nature of stress and the wide range in children's abilities to cope with stress, discusses various child psychotherapy methods, and differentiates teachers' and therapists' roles. Several suggestions for using this intervention are offered, including preparing the physical and interpersonal environment, deciding on methods and criteria for picture book selection, identifying topics for picture books, and obtaining available art supplies used by children with little or no instruction. The paper also describes the steps involved in the intervention: (1) selecting the theme, generally an experience that causes stress for young children, and then selecting a picture book that reflects this theme; (2) reading the storybook, focusing more on pictures than text, and then reviewing the story; (3) drawing a story with the children, focusing on personal expression; (4) asking the children to tell a story about their pictures and helping them understand the thematic material presented in the drawings and stories; (5) writing down the story, based on the drawing; and (6) reading the completed stories to the children or making them available for the children to look at and read as they choose. AB: This paper outlines a curriculum for young children that emphasizes conflict resolution and social development. It discusses the causes of violent behavior among children and describes activities and recommends children's literature on conflict resolution that can be used in the classroom. Several activities are examined, including role-playing activities, the use of conflict incidents to teach lessons on conflict resolution and appropriate social behavior, and games.
Specific advice is also provided to teachers on how to instill prosocial behavior in young children. An annotated list of 60 children's books on conflict resolution and prosocial behavior is included. Grief includes physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychological reactions to loss, and is not limited to feelings about death. Grief can be the response to loss of home or country, separation or displacement, and changes resulting from new life stages. This issue of the ACEA Resource series gives practical information for Australian early childhood workers in helping children cope with grief, death, and loss. Definitions are given for loss, grief, and bereavement. Topics covered include: (1) the adult perspective; (2) the child's perspective; (3) how to talk to a child about death; (4) predictable and normal reactions to death; (5) the death of a sibling; (6) the chronically ill child; (7) the loss of a pet; (8) cultural influences on grief, asserting the importance of understanding different traditions associated with loss and grief; (9) the early childhood educator's responsibilities, including recognizing feelings, explaining clearly what has happened, monitoring vulnerable children and adults, and establishing an ongoing program that acknowledges the need to grieve; and (10) books for children dealing with loss, death, and grief. Some of the techniques refer to caregivers' personal interactions with individual children or groups, while others target broader systems and require involvement of families, schools, and communities. The techniques include: modeling prosocial behaviors; using positive discipline strategies; providing alternatives to aggressive behavior; helping children become assertive; arranging regular viewing of prosocial media and videogames; using Socratic questioning methods; teaching cooperative games and conflict-resolution games; providing relaxation and focused imagination activities; pairing isolated children with sociable children; using children's literature to enhance empathy and caring; giving children responsibility in the classroom; facilitating cooperation rather than competition in school learning plans; arranging classroom spaces and play materials to facilitate cooperative play; developing projects that involve altruism; emphasizing to families that prosocial interactions are an integral curriculum component and a goal of the child care facility; and becoming familiar with structured curriculum packages designed to promote prosocial development. Limitations of young children's preoperational thought processes are noted, including children's confusion about the irreversibility of death and the loss of a sense of trust in their environment.
